At the request of the British Governor in place, Sir Bede Clifford, a Mauritius branch of the British Red Cross was established. After Mauritius became independent (12 March 1968), the National Society was incorporated by a parliamentary decree in 1973 and became “The Mauritius Red Cross Society”.
