The NS is officially recognised by the government of Mauritius as “an independent and autonomous voluntary relief organisation, auxiliary to the public authorities”. It acts, in all circumstances, in accordance with the Fundamental Principles of the Movement. Its goal is “to prevent and alleviate suffering impartially without discrimination as to nationality, race, sex, class, religion or political opinions”. The MRCS has approximately 400 – 500 members scattered among the for branches in Mauritius, 1 in Rodrigues and the Youth Section which composed the National Society, who are actively engaged in the various activities of the MRCS. These members/volunteers are supported by the 20 staffs of the MRCS.
At the beginning of World War II, Mauritius was still a British colony. At the request of the British Governor in place, Sir Bede Clifford, a Mauritius branch of the British Red Cross was established. After Mauritius became independent (12 March 1968), the National Society was incorporated by a parliamentary decree in 1973 and became “The Mauritius Red Cross Society”. It was recognised by the ICRC as the 132nd member of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
